Anyone expecting prim, proper, impersonal service won't find it at this exotic and slightly chaotic B&B run by avid traveller, Karin Dhadamus. If you like homey, heartfelt hospitality in a creative atmosphere, your first visit's unlikely to be your last. Each of the four short-stay rooms in this wonderfully erratic 1883-built townhouse are completely different, decorated with artworks Karin has collected on her travels in Morocco, Asia and Peru, and with local Belgian touches, including a quirky feather light fitting designed in Antwerp. Two rooms share a bathroom (including a clawfoot tub and shower) situated on the 1st floor - so you may have to take the stairs from your room to reach it. The standout is the Japanese-inspired Blue Room, with a low, languorous futon bed, polished hardwood floors, a slate-tiled bathroom and a private timber terrace that overlooks the sunny high-walled garden - perfect for reading the newspaper over coffee. Karin also rents two rooms for longer stays. Laundry facilities are available, and there's free wi-fi.

Explore the rambling St Josse quarter, especially along Chaussée de Haecht and Gare du Nord. At the popular Metin (Chaussée de Haecht 94), sample a crusty Turkish pide (pizza), served steaming hot from the wood kiln, and wash it down with a glass of ayran (buttermilk).
