Lonely Planet review

Tucked away in a small street just off Place Rogier in the shadows of the monolithic Sheraton and the Comfort Art Hotel Siru (both unmissable skyline landmarks), this stately 1906-built establishment stakes its claim as the oldest continuously operating hotel in Brussels.

The terracotta-tiled entry hall with its soaring ceiling leads to a genteel lounge with a fountain and stained-glass leadlight windows adjoining a small, low-lit intimate bar, and the breakfast room with ornate carved-timber chandelier-style light fittings. Despite this grandeur-styled entrance, this family-owned place is far from pretentious. The building was completely renovated in 2002, and blue and cream rooms with rattan fixtures are respectfully restrained. All 97 rooms have bathtubs, many of which only have hand-held shower roses. There is a fridges in every room but no minibar: you can buy drinks at reception (or over the road at the supermarket). All room rates are heavily discounted on weekends.
