Looking as if it would be more at home on a tree-lined Paris boulevard, this handsome 1892-built cream building (not to be confused with the similarly named Excellior hotel by the beach) has a lush garden but uneven rooms.

You'll find 42 spacious rooms inside this elegant building by the train station. Most have balconies and minimalist decor although standards vary greatly from one room to another: some smelt unpleasantly dank when we visited and others looked more like a cookie-cut chain hotel than the boutique establishment Excelsior aspires to be. Staff are amenable so ask to change rooms if you're not satisfied. Apart from the main building, there are also several courtyard rooms grouped around the garden, two of which, rooms 501 and 502, have kitchenettes. Two wheelchair-equipped rooms, 503 and 504, also open to the garden. A buffet breakfast is available beneath the chandeliers in a red, round tabled salon, which adjoins a stately reading room. There are just four free car spaces available out the front.
