Lonely Planet review

This was the first backpackers hostel to open on Long St and it still has a loyal band of devotees. It's housed in a block of 14 small flats, with four beds and a bathroom in each, so it never seems too crowded.

The hostel is arranged around a leafy courtyard and decorated with glittery mosaics. A buzzer gate at the bottom of the stairs ensures security is kept tight. There are also personal safes in each of the dorms for guests' use. The building is in pretty good condition, without being overly fancy, and practically every wall is plastered with information about things to do in Cape Town, often put up by the hostel itself and written in a tell-it-like-it-is style. The staff are experienced overlanders and can help plan itineraries and make bookings all over Africa and the boozy bar and chilled-out veranda are good places to meet future travelling companions. There's a big, well-equipped self-catering kitchen - although this may be seldom used with the cafes and restaurants of Long St so close by.
