The least pricey of the Waterfront's three major hotels, this friendly, contemporary business hotel is a good option if you want to be based at the Waterfront but don't need the opulence of the Table Bay or the Cape Grace.

The V&A, as it's affectionately known, is an old favourite with Cape Town visitors, having been converted into a hotel from a warehouse in 1996. Staying here, you'll get a real impression of the Waterfront as a working harbour, from the cargo ships that slip past the bar windows and the luxury catamarans that fly out of the harbour mouth at speed on windy days. Inside the hotel the decor is smart and contemporary, with whitewashed brick walls leading to large bedrooms with excellent views of the mountain and the docks. Wrought-iron curtain rails, orange lampshades and bedspreads and old nautical pictures on the walls add character to the standard modern hotel rooms with their DVD players, glass coffee tables and marble bathrooms. The harbourside restaurant receives regular visits from local Cape vineyards showcasing their wine and cuisine.
