Ashanti is one of Cape Town's most celebrated backpackers. It is a super-popular party hostel housed in a huge, brightly painted old house with a fantastic view of Table Mountain from its deck. If you're travelling on the cheap, it has a small campsite too. There are few countries that provide a five-star backpacking experience quite like South Africa, and Ashanti is one of the country's flagship hostels. The interior is painted throughout in warm and welcoming shades of yellow. The reception doubles as a travel centre, with several busy women tapping away at computers - the hostel can book just about any tour or accommodation you can think of in most of Southern Africa. The dorms aren't the biggest, but they're very secure - you need a PIN code to get through the door, and there are lock-up cupboards for each bed. The bustling bar also houses a pool table and serves the usual range of toasties and burgers. For something quieter, opt for the excellent rooms (with private bathrooms), situated in two heritage-listed houses around the corner. Ashanti are also in the process of setting up a new hostel in Green Point.
