Nestled among the pretty coloured houses of De Waterkant, this very chic small hotel exudes New York cool. Its furnishings wouldn't look out of place in a glossy magazine, and the trendy gay and mixed clubs and bars of the 'village' are just a few steps away.

De Waterkant is a jewel of a neighbourhood, the focal point of Cape Town's gay scene but also attracting a genuinely mixed crowd thanks to its profusion of fashionable boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Village Lodge is one of the smartest properties in the village, with breakfast being served in Soho, a stylish Thai restaurant full of black lacquer furniture, gold Buddhas and flowering bamboo. Upstairs, the seven rooms jostle for space around a courtyard featuring barrels of floating flowers. Inside, the bedrooms are small but perfectly formed, with flat-screen TVs and bright, striped cushions. Climb a spiral staircase to the roof to lounge by the swimming pool with its amazing view of the mountain and the bay - the perfect place for an exclusive party. The lodge also has an annexe on Napier St and several self-catering cottages in the village.
