Big Blue is one of Cape Town's most popular hostels, with generally friendly staff and a great location - it's just a few minutes walk from the V&A Waterfront and even closer to the new stadium.

The hallway of Big Blue is a very grand affair - a sweeping staircase is flanked by Grecian columns and featuring a huge stained-glass window. The building used to be a fancy hotel, but has now morphed into a labyrinthine backpackers. There's also an internet cafe and travel centre, which organises trips all over South Africa. Leading off the funky bar is something the hostel describes as a 'Zen garden' - meaning a vaguely Japanese-style pebbled space with a tinkling fountain, ideal for chilling out. If you stay two nights here in a private room or three in a dorm you earn yourself a free airport pickup.
