Perched on the side of the mountain, this rambling, wooden-floored guesthouse has had a fresh makeover courtesy of new owners and exudes friendliness and rustic charm. There's a wide variety of rooms here, each with crisp linens, colourful pillows and throws, old-fashioned wooden furniture and bathroom with a rain-style shower. The views from the bedrooms at the front and the airy, glass-walled breakfast room are panoramic, looking across False Bay towards Simon's Town. The best room, occupying the loft, has a private balcony where you can sip your morning coffee to the sound of seagulls. There's quite a large pool outside on the one of the property's lower terraces, overlooked by the cafe. Kalk Bay is one of Cape Town's quirkiest and most bohemian neighbourhoods, a warren of cobbled streets that clamber up the sides of the mountain. There's a working harbour here, and the guesthouse is happy to arrange a fishing trip with one of the fishing crews that depart daily from here.
