Located in the upscale Escalón neighbourhood, this is arguably the best budget hotel in San Salvador. Although there's not much sunlight, rooms are spotless and the beds are good. Rooms vary considerably in size and amenities but if you're flexible, the value is hard to beat.

A long corridor opens onto a TV lounge where a few university students - long-term residents - often gather to watch dubbed action movies. The rooms fan out from there - some open onto a second common room, others onto a leafy courtyard. Most are windowless but the gleaming floors and good beds make this easy to overlook. Rooms vary considerably in size - the smallest are like glorified closets but the biggest are palatial. Only rooms with private bathrooms have hot water or air-con, so be sure to call ahead if you want either.
