Before hostels and B&Bs multiplied across South America, this was the sort of place where backpackers crashed: old, beaten up, extremely basic, dirt cheap and full of character. But if you can't take basic, look elsewhere.

The Helvetia is an old building with two interior patios complete with dogs and cats wandering around, broken pots holding barely alive plants, and sheets and towels hanging from crisscrossed lines overhead. It's an old-school place, with chipped, mismatched tile floors, bent balconies and flaking plaster. It's wacky, to say the least. Inside the rooms, the walls are peach, and the paint is flaking, but, despite the ramshackle quality of the place, the rooms are kept surprisingly clean. Avoid the rooms with shared bathrooms, if only because the bathrooms are very unkempt. The rooms in the upstairs-front are by far the best, so try to snag one after you arrive. It looks like the only upgrade in recent years was the sign outside, but you'll be fine on a sunny day (it's pretty gloomy during winter).
