Une belle addresse (a beautiful address) since 1890, this charming manor-house hotel with bottle-green wooden shutters and wrought-iron balconies oozes soul. Its wintertime clientele is distinctly young and fun, due in part no doubt to Chambre Neuf (Room Number 9) - the buzzing après-ski bar it runs on the ground floor.Reception - black leather seating, terracotta tiles and low-hanging shades of amber - is stylish, as is the old-fashioned cage lift that rattles up and down four floors. Rooms are not overly generous for space but come with elegant dark-wood furniture, complimented by white linen and denim-coloured duvet covers, and many have small balconies or French windows at least to make the very best of those mountain views. The walk-in-walk-out showers without tray look great, even if it does mean you risk wet toes when peeing after a shower. Count an additional cost per day for breakfast in the grand dining-room. Parking in the courtyard is free as in wi-fi.

Gape at the Mer de Glace, the second largest glacier in the Alps, and be gobsmacked by dinosaurs made from ice in the Grotte de Glace. To get here, cross the street from the hotel, scale the metal staircase next to the central train station and cross the tracks to Gare de Montenvers. From here, ride a quaint red mountain train and cable car up to the glacier.
