A hostel-hotel hybrid with clean, well-above-average dorm rooms in the main building, and an annex out back with 10 great-value private rooms. No hostel in Riga is guaranteed quiet, but its location well out of Old Town gives it a chance. Free basic breakfast for all.The main building is a clean, above-average hostel with a 4-bed, a 10-bed and a 12-bed dorm room. The dorms have sturdy wooden bunk beds and there's an OK common room with cable TV. It can get loud, but its location well out of Old Town decreases the odds of that happening. It's quieter than most hostels in Riga. There are three common toilets (respectable 9-to-1 bed-to-loo ratio) and two showers (13-to-one ratio) here. Out back there's an annexe in a wing of an old apartment with 10 nicely renovated private rooms. They are not big or fancy but they're cheap and clean with private bathrooms. All guests, including those in the dorm rooms, get free breakfast. It's not much and the coffee is indescribably bad, but hey, how many hostels have free breakfast? Self-catering may be hard, however, as the kitchen is not well equipped. The house computer has free Internet access.

It's in a perfectly nice residential area but there's not a whole lot happening up here. However, it's just a five-minute walk to bustling K. Barona iela, one of Riga's main shopping drags with plenty of hip bars and restaurants. Rama, a cheap vegetarian restaurant run by the local Hari Krishna society, is a few paces south of Bruninieku on K. Barona.
