Service fit for a king, exquisite art and a plump perch on pedestrian Pilies gatve justify the top-flight reputation of this old darling, which has been in business since the 16th century. Request one of the street-side rooms with views of St John's Church.

The somewhat small standard rooms don't dazzle quite enough to justify the sky-high prices, but the common areas more than make up for it. The wide-arched hallways, lined with fine European art, would be the envy of many a museum. The cellar restaurant with its vaulted brick ceilings is truly special and there's an equally refined sitting area with more art, books and a computer for Internet browsing. While the rooms don't quite hit these heights, they are also festooned with art, immaculately kempt and boast plenty of five-star amenities. Stylish French furniture, harmonious interior design and the odd wall fresco lend the rooms an aura of elegance - just don't expect anything too head-turning outside of the larger, plusher suites. Ten of the rooms are wheelchair accessible. Shame on management for charging exorbitant rates for wi-fi.
