A business class hotel that is anything but run-of-the-mill, the Scandic Neringa delivers some of the finest service in town in a retro, Soviet-chic atmosphere. Steep weekend discounts and a prime location make this the ideal spot for a weekend city break. There's nothing too fancy going on in the rooms, just plenty of space, Van Gogh and Picasso reprints on the wall and a warm Scandinavian design that wouldn't offend the most persnickety patron. And this mid-range option tosses more than a few top-end bones your way - bathrobes, full-length mirrors and kettles for starters. Dirt and dust are clearly enemies here and are dealt with accordingly. If there's a complaint it's with the below-average bathroom fixtures and towels. The hotel is wired to the hilt, and has a broad range of English-language magazines in the 1st-floor library. The restaurant retains fab 1970s-Soviet touches like a mosaic floor, frescoed walls and tinkling fountains. Breakfast on the street terrace is perfect for summertime people-watching. Refreshingly, they don't rip you off on airport transfers or beer in the bar. Be warned that tour groups often roost here.

Join the beautiful people by donning your fanciest plumage and taking a lazy stroll along Gedimino prospektas, which turns into a pedestrian walkway at weekends. While you're at it, pop into the moving Museum of Genocide Victims, a Vilnius must-see. Italian eatery Da Antonio is bellisimo; for something less fancy in that genre try Pomodoro on Jogailos 4.
