The hotel is in a quiet lane of the old city near the Reichsstadtmuseum (Imperial City Museum). It's an atmospheric place with a fine collection of local art and cultural artefacts, including the oldest (and no doubt largest) convent kitchen in Germany. The finest wine tavern in town is Zur Höll, at Burggasse 8, in the town's oldest original building.
Rothenburg's favourite yarn tells the tale of how the city was spared destruction in the Thirty Years' War when its mayor won a bet he could drink six pints of wine in one draught.
