Address: Dorfstrasse 19 , Oberammergau 82487, Germany
Right in the village centre of Oberammergau, this homely place with a frescoed facade has been an inn since 1612. Rooms look out over the main square lined with woodcarving shops, and the Passion Play theatre is a stone's throw away.It was a stop favoured by tradesmen, and historical emblems of their profession can be found on the ceiling of the restaurant. A postal depot was added later and an old dispatch coach still graces the lobby. The guest rooms are simple but comfortable, best described as modern country style with plenty of bare beams, solid hardwood furniture, TVs, telephones and en suite bathrooms. The standard rooms tend to be snug, so best go for the more spacious 'comfort' class with nicer views. Free parking is directly behind the hotel.

Oberammergau is a woodcarving centre of international acclaim. You can watch the masters at work while you browse their superbly crafted wares for a one-of-a-kind gift. The quaint streets are full of lüftlmalerei, a striking type of illusionist facade painting that originated in this town; the Pilatushaus on Ludwig-Thoma-Strasse is a brilliant example.
In 1950, the Passion Play actress cast in the role of Mary was dismissed after flirting with an American GI.
