Address: Po box 103, rarotonga, Aroa beach , Rarotonga , Cook islands
Probably the busiest traditional resort on the island. It's all suitably Polynesian: there are plenty of Tangaroa statues, floral designs and Cook Islands motifs around. The bedrooms continue the tropical theme, separated into several gaudily coloured blocks with various levels of accommodation.Of the island's two large resorts, the Rarotongan is by far the better choice - the Edgewater over on the west side of the island has all the charm of a municipal car park, so by those standards the Rarotongan is positively luminary. Like all large resorts, there's a bewildering variety of rooms to choose from, but you'll probably find most of them are pretty identical once you get inside. The best rooms have a beachfront aspect; the newly-built honeymoon suite is particularly luxurious and is packed with Polynesian character (top features include rattan walls, custom-designed lighting, open air shower and an outdoor spa bath). All the usual resort facilities are present and functional: tennis courts, souvenir shop, spa centre, vehicle hire, business centre, kid's club, beach activities and a couple of restaurants are all available on site.

You don't have to walk far to find something to do at the Rarotongan - after all, that's what a resort's all about. But forget all about the on-site facilities - you're here to explore the island, so saddle up on a scooter, hit the coast road and don't come home till you've seen the sights.
