This crusty old classic lined with red rugs from the Brezhnev era has plenty of character, if not many creature comforts. If you're looking for that authentic Soviet lodging experience - faux-wood cots, peeling wallpaper, '50s black-and-white TV sets - you could do a whole lot worse. You sure can't beat the price. Well-stained rugs, hideous laminate wardrobes, cheap plastic fixtures, Lilliputian bath tubs and watercolours that wouldn't earn passing grades in a high school art class round out the effect. Despite all that, it's actually livable. Linens are quite comfortable and the mattresses much younger and more buoyant than the cots they rest upon. It's clean enough and doesn't smell as bad as most barely renovated Soviet throwbacks. Sweeping wide corridors with gigantic mirrors at either end, a hefty wooden turnstile front door and regal but dysfunctional sculpted-stone balconies offer hints of past grandeur. Some might call it a masterpiece.

Most of Kaunas' museums are concentrated around Unity Square (Vienybes aikšte), just a two-minute walk from here. While Metropolis does not have Internet, pedestrian Laisves aleja is a free wi-fi zone and has plenty of outdoor drinking and people-watching opportunities. For cheap eats try the huge Pizza Jazz around the corner on Laisves.
