The best views in Kaunas can be found at this towering hilltop beacon, a short funicular ride from the centre of New Town. Its rooms are fairly charm-free but sizable and there's local art for sale on the corridor walls.Standard rooms boast a decent array of mod cons and furniture to fill up all those square metres. If you think the standard rooms are big, check out the suites, some of which could easily double as conference rooms. They also have massive bar-buffets. Hmmm, did somebody say 'party palace'?! Stains on the rugs suggest we're not the first ones to think of that. There's no Internet connection to speak of here, but at least parking is free. For these prices, we'd like to see them upgrade from key locks to card locks. The restaurant is utterly boring but has a terrace with views.

You're a bit out of the way but the funicular ride to the base of the hill is enjoyable and from there it's just a five-minute walk to the central pedestrian street, Laisves aleja. On the way you might like to pop into Kaunas' most happening bar, Irish-style Fortas, on Donelaicio 65.
