Fans of minimalist design will enjoy a stay at the simple but quirky Apple. Look carefully and you'll spot the green-apple motif on your pillows, on the ties of the student receptionists and on the cute silk wall hangings that add a splash of colour to the otherwise white rooms. Also quirky is the owner's stairwell-based 'souvenir museum', which contains, among other things, a Davy Crockett-style coon-tail cap from Canada. There's an odd array of rooms - the 'family' rooms with no TVs are actually the cheapest, and share a bathroom between every two. The 14 rooms here might feel a bit cold to some because of a general lack of fabric. The smaller standard rooms, some of which have slanted ceilings, feel warmer than the deluxe rooms, which don't make optimum use of their extra space. Staff go out of their way to please and bring breakfast on a tray to your room. A computer sits in reception for guests to use and parking is free.

Down in this section of Old Town you're practically right next to old Kaunas Castle, which is mostly ruins but worth a stroll nonetheless. Afterwards, why not dine on country Lithuanian fare brought to you by fair maidens in traditional dress at Berneliu Užeiga just down the street? The buses to New Town stop nearby.
