With a location as unlikely as its name, the South Pacific Hotel may be in an odd part of Wan Chai but it's well worth your consideration. Renovated in a modern style and offering access to the little-explored backstreets of Wan Chai and views over the locally beloved Happy Valley Racecourse, it's an unlikely hit. This prominent glassy tower is located in the southern stretches of Wan Chai, beside the feature that gives the small district of Morrison Hill its name. It gets swamped by business travellers when conference fever hits the area, but at other times it provides a friendly retreat for leisure travellers. Try for the top rooms, particularly the ones that look south beyond the office blocks to the blazing lights of Happy Valley Racecourse. Rooms on the lower levels still have pretty good facilities, but lack the fresher ambience of the upgrades. The courteousness and overall agreeability of the staff is another reason to consider staying here.

Spread out to the south of the hotel is the iconic Happy Valley Racecourse, where locals (aided and abetted by visitors) indulge in their favourite form of gambling during Hong Kong's horse racing season, which occurs from September to late June. Most meetings are on Wednesday evenings.
