The rack rates at this well-equipped, well-located tower of a hotel have remained relatively stable over the past few years, which is good news for anyone looking for a mid-range room in the middle of Tsim Sha Tsui. Despite the white-jacketed bellhops, the Empire is a place of few pretences and little superfluous fuss.

The reception staff can be a bit brusque, but it does seem to get very busy at times, with waves of Chinese and international guests rolling through. Any tensions are easily relieved in the handsome little cafe-bar located at the top of a short staircase that leads from the lobby. Ease yourself onto one of the cream-coloured banquettes, order a drink and marvel at how quickly you forget about the outside world. There's a popular Japanese restaurant on the 2nd floor and an impressive indoor swimming pool and spa. The rooms have a subdued style that eschews any bright colours, and make good use of available technology, including broadband Internet access.
