You've got to love the Lisboa. It's been an institution in Macau, and right across Asia, since it was built in the '60s. It's the kind of place where you expect to stumble across Roger Moore and Tony Curtis propping up the bar. For many, its history, central location and good feng shui mean it is still the best bet in town, despite the Las Vegas competition. To its credit, the Lisboa has picked up its act since the Vegas boys arrived. A five-year long renovation of the 1000-odd rooms has transformed what was a fading pile into a modern hotel with the sort of over-the-top touches you'd expect from a temple to kitsch - take note of the mosaic bathroom floors. But the Lisboa is less about the rooms and more about the experience. Its stuffy, smoky, circular gambling halls are in marked contrast to the cavernous spaces in the new casinos. It's a package complemented by the giant chandeliers, Crazy Paris dancing girl show, 12 restaurants and eye-popping neon. If you're a punter with a sense of history, it's hard to go past the Lisboa, although the towering landmark that is its younger, taller sister, the Grand Lisboa, does put it in the shade.

There are quite a few Lisboa guests who never leave this warren of a place. And it's understandable, as there is no shortage of entertainment and the food is generally pretty good. Notably, 'Chef of the Century' Joel Robuchon's Robuchon a Galera (tel: 2837 7666) is widely acclaimed as one of the best French restaurants in Asia. Outside, Macau's World Heritage sites are within easy walking distance.
