This 'island resort' complex is on the eastern side of Hác Sá Beach. Each room has a large terrace. The overall atmosphere is that of a country club, with an attached 18-hole golf course, two swimming pools, an outdoor spa and sauna and fitness centre on 60 hectares of land. The resort's Panorama Lounge is a delightful spot for a sundowner. The Westin's ziggurat-style exterior looks rather dated now with all the brash new competition in town, but the room decor has kept pace with modern times. It remains a five-star resort with smooth and efficient service to match (and it was good enough for the England Olympic squad in 2008). The beds are almost unfeasibly comfortable and the shape of the building means every room has a sizable outdoor terrace and a view onto the ocean or the beach. The one downside is the freezing air-con. Still, the Westin is one of the most individual hotels in Macau and a great escape - especially for families, with its comprehensive kids club, and golfers, who can tee off from the roof out to sea (yes the balls float and yes, some poor sucker has to collect them in a rowing boat).

Coloane is the only part of Macau that's not changing at a headspinning rate, so there's lots of character and no cranes. A short walk away is Hác Sá Beach and Fernando (tel: 2888 2264), which is a favourite among Hong Kong's expats out for a long, lively lunch of Portuguese seafood and wine. Otherwise, head across the island to wonderful Coloane Village, with its cafes, antique stores and cheap restaurants.
The Macau Golf & Country Club is on the roof of the hotel, and every year it hosts the Macau Open, usually in May.
