Backpacker alert! If you want to meet your pack-lugging fellows, this welcoming little place is your best bet. Of course, as a backpacker's favourite it's far from luxurious, but the central location, price and smiling service make up for that.

The location is a real selling point. From the tiny ground floor entrance, the heart of old Macau is all around and this is the perfect base for exploring the charming lanes that make Macau such a unique mix of Europe and China. The hotel is in a building with Deco hints (more in the stairways than anywhere else), but the rooms will encourage you to get out and explore. They come in a wide variety - from single to five-bed - and most are relatively large if very simple, with worn lino floors and compact, functional bathrooms. For all its limitations, the atmosphere here is good the staff is happy to store luggage and (unusually in this area) keep prostitutes out of the hotel.
