Despite the massive, glossy new hotel-casinos springing up everywhere, if we had to pick just one high-end place to stay it would be the Mandarin for its superlative service, comfortable rooms, spa complex and great little bar. It's not a place for chip-toting high rollers though; the attached casino is tiny and lacks lustre.

There may be a rash of new neon pleasure palaces in town but the Mandarin still measures up well, with its attention to detail and attentive, efficient and friendly service. The amenities are good, you'll find the best breakfast in town at the cafe Bela Vista, and Vasco is the perfect venue to catch quality jazz crooners at one of Macau's most chilled-out bars. The spa complex, complete with large outdoor pool, offers the kind of relaxation that's hard to find in Macau these days. Downsides? The bathrooms are a bit dated (although an upgrade is in the wings) and land reclamation and flash new casinos have marooned the Mandarin inland, robbing many of its rooms of unobstructed water views. Despite this, a visit to the Mandarin is a reminder that service and atmosphere still matter more than marble acreage or in-room tech toys. All in all great high-end value.
