The Holiday Inn chain occupies two hotels on the Esplanade - this retro survivor is by far the hippest of the two. It may look old-school externally, but inside everything's up to date. It's worth paying a bit extra for an ocean-view suite.Northern Territorians of all descriptions and inclinations file through the Holiday Inn's doors, cashing in on good off-season and weekend rates that usually include a buffet breakfast. The building itself dips into a late-'60s Las Vegas/Goldfinger design style for its curvy architectural guidance - the spiral concrete staircase in the lobby is a classic! Retreat to your funky suite and open the door onto your little balcony, just big enough for a couple of chairs, a plate of cheese and a chilled sunset wine or two. Downstairs the timber-floored restaurant lures nocturnal crowds with its wicker, Latino ambience. Families utilise interconnecting rooms; disabled access is good.

It seems odd when you're on the northern edge of Australia, but Darwin sits on a south-jutting peninsula and actually faces west - watch the sunset from your balcony with a glass of something cold.
