Motel-style Mariners Court is a tucked-away treasure offering value-for-money and welcoming service. It won't be the flashest place you'll stay in Sydney, but it has that rare combo of handy location, reasonable rates and some elbow room. All rooms have courtyards or balconies, some with leafy views. There are enough rooms here (40 of them over three floors) to house a visiting orchestra (we saw them unpacking their tubas when we visited), so unless the New York Philharmonic is in town you should be able to find a bed. The main internal colour-scheme is blue and cream - a bit 1994, but also a nod to the building's maritime connections (it was the Sydney Sailors' Home at one point). Some of the corridors bring hospital wards to mind, but it's easy enough to recast them in a cruise-ship light - wide, spartan and shipshape. Laundry facilities are available, as is a big bathtub if you can't face another shower. There's also a BBQ area and pool table if you feel like getting together and singing a sea shanty or two with the other guests. Good wheelchair access too.
