This part of town is slowly but surely tarting itself up, and nowhere embodies this better than the Pensione Hotel - a tasteful reworking of a stately George St building, with prices guaranteed to keep it popular.

The Pensione is next to St Peter Julian's church, so at least you'll know the neighbours are quiet. Mind you, George St is the city's busiest thoroughfare, so if you get a room at the front of the building you'll hear the city's belly grumble through the night (although you'll also get natural light through the windows). Smart, neutral-shaded rooms have air-con, TV and fridge, although standard rooms don't have tea or coffee-making facilities. Service is friendly and security is good - there's a lounge on the Sussex St side of the property that has lockers, so you can stash your stuff safely. Mark Rothko prints and a grand carved wooden staircase add some sass to the warm, restrained surrounds. You'd never guess the Pensione building is a former post office, which was derelict for 40 years before the hotel moved in.
