Built in 1894, the Vulcan was a watering hole well into the 90s before the lousy pub rooms were converted into affordable, boutique mid-range accommodation. Discreet international staff direct you to minimalist grey-and-white en suite rooms, complete with TV, wireless internet and mini-bar.There are 30 rooms here of varying sizes and layouts, but all fit the bill for business travellers looking for a sophisticated retreat or budgeteers looking to upgrade to a stylish night's sleep. With all these sleek interiors, it's hard to believe the ol' Vulcan was once a seedy dockworkers' drinking dive, and later a jazz bar full of pot-headed hippies and finger-snappin' students! My, haven't we all grown up? It's well worth shelling out the extra few dollars for a Superior Double or Superior Queen room, both of which are roomier and have courtyard views (the Superior Queens have kitchenettes too). Downstairs the long, thin Hummingbird restaurant serves breakfast daily and dinner Monday to Friday - reasonably priced, Mod Oz fare, with a simple but sophisticated wine list.
