It's not a big hotel, or a famous hotel, or a stylish hotel. Chairman Mao never stayed here, and IM Pei didn't design it. It's just a simple, unpretentious little place with clean, comfy rooms and super-helpful staff. And it really puts the location in 'location, location, location'.

How good is the location? The Forbidden City is just a few minutes west, Wangfujing Dajie is a few minutes east, and historic hutongs (narrow alleys) spread out in every direction. You could happily spend a week in the area and travel everywhere on foot from the hotel. The Fangyuan is going in for a refit in November 2005, which will surely please its many fans. We can't tell you at this time what the rooms will look like, as at the time of writing they were choosing between three designs. However, you can expect a similar no-frills design to the past (just a whole lot newer looking). You can also expect the same friendly service. Even though they were closed, they still had their travel advisory centre open, and we saw many outside guests being helped not only with bookings, but also with free advice.
