Check-in can be a bit slow, which is regrettable, because you'll want to check out the neighbourhood as soon as possible. There's shopping, eating and some of the greatest attractions in the city almost at your doorstep. What about the rooms? The best in our opinion were the upper-floor deluxe with their soft beds and good natural lighting. Views from some included a sweeping shot of the Forbidden City. Standard rooms did not seem sufficiently high-end enough to make them worth the price (unless you get a good off-season discount). Other hotels offer similar value for far less, but they usually don't feature ADSL, satellite TV, pool, games room, fitness centre, and multiple eating options. If such things are essential to your hotel stay, then even the standards of these rooms make the Grand not a bad choice. It's not terribly well situated for public transportation (the BRT is a 10-15 minute walk south), but it is within walking distance of the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the lakes. And of course you are right on Wangfujing Dajie, one of Beijing's top shopping and eating streets.

You can see the 9000 rooms of the Forbidden City from your living room. Now go visit them in person. You might want to start at Jinshan Park, just a few minutes west of the hotel. It has ancient temples, lovely gardens and sweeping views of Beijing. Wangfujing Dajie has some excellent restaurants serving duck, lamb hotpot and other regional dishes, but don't forget the more homey (but still delicious) snacks that can be found at Wangfujing Snack Street, and Donghuamen Night Market.
