Address: 2 xi dajie chongwenmen , Beijing 100062, China Show on map
Clearly designed for the middle-management business traveller, the Chongwenmen has a reasonably full range of facilities, but it's also a good option for the casual visitor. Rooms are bright, clean, well maintained and simply furnished. Higher floors even have wide-open city views.A major renovation back in 2004 added some glitz, and a midrange in Beijing without too many scuffs and dirty carpeting is to be respected. Bellhops add a measure of gentility to the place, as do fresh flowers in the rooms. The decent restaurant and bar options mean you don't have to scoot out the front door as soon as you leave your room. All in all, you'll find this place a clear step up from a budget hotel (but a step down from top end spots). One unbeatable feature is the location just metres from the underground. Tiananmen Square is one stop to the west and the train station one to the east.

Dine on Peking duck at the 150-year-old Bianyifang Roast Duck Restaurant (tel: 6712 0505; 2a Chongwenmenwai Dajie) across the street. European-style buildings in the Foreign Legation Quarter are a short walk north. It's a nice area for strolling. For something completely different, visit the Ming City Wall Ruins just east of the hotel.
