Capped by its distinctive clock tower - a motif that morphs crudely into the flying saucer on top of the Radisson virtually next door - this historic three-star hotel is strong on both character and style, but the dated feel is hard to shift.

It's lovely just stooging about the small but grand foyer of this Chinese-managed hotel - note the chiselled sign outside the classical facade that declares 'Welcome' - and staff make an effort, but management makes few exertions to convincingly woo international guests. Rooms are cheaper than at the more celebrated Park to the west, but they look faded. The location is just as good, even if there isn't the Art Deco cachet of its more famous rival. To maximise the charms of the Pacific, angle for the pricier doubles overlooking People's Park rather than the cheaper ones tossed round the back, although tired-looking furniture comes as standard in all rooms. The dark and subdued bar really says it all: overhaul time is way overdue.
