Erected in 1934, the four-star Park was Shànghai's tallest building until the 1980s - the Shanghai World Financial Center of its day if you will. The Shànghai Chinese said that if you looked all the way to the top of the Park, your hat would fall off. Today the hotel is one of Shànghai's purest examples of Art Deco architecture from its cultural zenith.

Those looking for location and more location will appreciate that this is (or was) Shànghai's exact epicentre: a 1950 town survey designated this exact spot as the city's geographic centre point, a topographical status enshrined in a lobby plaque with a glowing red light identifying the noble Park. The lobby maintains the eye-catching facade's Art Deco overture, despite adjustments from the 1990s. Those who know their Shànghai history will enjoy the Park, but service can be dilatory - pretty much regulation in this type of hotel. Rooms are comfortable enough but weary. Book ahead for fine views of Nanjing Rd and People's Park.
