These former Picardie Apartments (1934) still boast impressive Art Deco charm, most noticeably in the fine exterior, the rectangular black and white floor pattern of the lobby and the 1930s touches throughout.
Recently renamed the Hengshan Picardie Hotel to recall its original name, this 254-room French Concession period hotel has benefited from renovations that have restored crispness and gloss to the presentation. All rooms come with free broadband; superior rooms are attractively styled with European-style decor and possess character - they are generally large enough, but try to grab a corner room. Budget rooms are much simpler and very small (and may require you walking up one or two flights of stairs to reach) but are serviceable and good value. Discounts of 30% are available. Staff are well-attired, but be prepared for occasionally sluggish service. The location is good, between Hengshan Road and the Xujiahui shopping district. The hotel is wi-fi equipped.
