The name's a massive misnomer considering it's a good 15-minute hike to the Bund, but this impressive 22-storey business-hotel newcomer has good rooms, smiling, keen-to-impress service and a fine location just east of People's Square.

The foyer is a regulation sparkling gold and marble confection, but this is Shànghai and all four-star hotels follow a predictable formula. Rooms are fresh and comfortable, and pleasantly styled with both modern and traditional touches, while service is more than adequate. A good selection of restaurants includes Vietnamese, Western and Chinese cuisine but the hotel's overall range of facilities - which extends to a Helen Huang spa on the 3rd floor, a darkened cafe off the lobby and ubiquitous flat-screen TVs - is otherwise frugal. The hotel is sandwiched handily between the Bund and People's Square, with East Nanjing Rd just to the north, so sightseeing and shopping is straightforward even though the hotel finds itself in a slightly grubby and busy junction of streets.
