Manned by professional staff, this 27-storey hotel has been transformed over recent years into a well-managed and proficient four-star hotel. The pink post-modern exterior, however, is hardly a unique selling point.

Recent refurbishment of the Equatorial's rooms has ejected the weary in favour of the tasteful and comfortable making for a satisfying stay in a well-located hotel. Service standards are also improving (but some guests still grumble) although West Yan'an Rd - all twin levels of it - puts the roar of Shànghai's traffic on your doorstep. It's perfectly suitable for both business travellers and those traipsing about town - the Equatorial is a short stroll from Jing'an Temple metro station - great for transport, but not so ideal for wining and dining. The hotel boasts a large choice of restaurants (including a popular international buffet in the lobby cafe). Mammoth discounts of around 50% deflate the bloated tariff, so check in advance.
