In a converted Victorian nursing home on the corner of a beautiful square sits Malmaison, a boutique hotel catering to media, arty and business types that inhabit fashionable Clerkenwell.

Given Malmaison's conservatively grand frontage onto a hidden-away square, the Alice in Wonderland lobby of chessboard carpet, black seats that look like pawns and supersized chairs is a quirky surprise. Once in the rooms, the look is more classic with contemporary fittings in neutral shades. It's young, fresh and cutting-edge enough to be hip, but not so outrageous as to scare off the big-bucked businessmen. You can even select your choice of soundtrack from the digital music library. Once you're suitably primed up, slink down to the subterranean bar for an extravagant cocktail or a selection from the extensive wine list.
