If contemporary British design is your thing then you'll love Number Sixteen. It's the kind of place that looks so effortlessly chic and so wonderfully eclectic that you might be tempted to think that - with the right amount of creative wit and enough trips to IKEA - you would surely be able to replicate the design in your own home.

Making design look easy is Kit Kemp's forte, and Number Sixteen is another one of her gorgeous creations. A simple bird mobile hangs in one drawing room and a series of ornithological books, cut up like paper doll chains, are pinned nonchalantly against a wall. In true Kemp style all 42 rooms are individually designed and seamlessly blend traditional and modern styles. Contemporary fabrics combine with conservative prints while bespoke furniture sits alongside treasures unearthed from antique shops. It's a relaxed, homely vibe that's created, rather than an achingly trendy one. The service is second to none and if you stay longer than five minutes, it's guaranteed you'll be greeted by name. It's the least pricy of the Firmdale chain and there's a lovely garden tucked away at the back.
