The history of the Colonnade Town House is almost as interesting as the roster of guests who've stayed here. Originally built as two private homes in the 1800s, this hotel has experienced life as a hospital - the original lift which was used to carry stretchers and trolleys up to the operating theatre still works - and a ladies dormitory. The handsome Colonnade is in Little Venice, one of London's most charming quarters, with its myriad of canals, houseboats, riverside bars and cafes. The rooms are comfortable and elegant, classically dressed in various combinations of scrumptious red and green velvet against crisp white linen and dark wood furniture. Deluxe rooms have four-poster beds. The smaller doubles could do with an extra square metre or so and the London underground rumblings might keep the basement room dwellers awake. All other rooms, however, are very generous with soaring ceilings, grand windows, and some private balconies.

Little Venice is one of the most charming areas in London. You could do worse than spend an afternoon wandering along the canals. Alternatively, you can take a waterbus down Regent's Canal to London Zoo.
The mathematician responsible for breaking the Enigma code, Alan Turing, was born here in 1921, and the original bed constructed for John F Kennedy's state visit in 1962 is still here.
