Anouska Hempel's seriously cool hotel is a stunning example of minimalist design. Towering atriums, floating walls and a Zen-like simplicity are just some of the features that make this place unique.

It's an impressive, if not overwhelming, example of what you can do with very straight lines - even the garden topiary is cut at right angles - and designs in white, black and various hues of beige. While the effect can be oppressive - the corridors, for example, are very tall, narrow and white (and potentially problematic if trying to get into your room at the same time as the person opposite) - the rooms are effortlessly beautiful, comfortable and unique (one room even contains a bed within a cage suspended over a living area). Occasionally it feels like The Hempel might try a little too hard - the UV light in the elevator just doesn't seem necessary - but you'll probably never travel in another lift like it.
