At the crossroads of European style and functionality, this place doesn't leave you gazing longingly at expense-account suites down the street. The design is classic modernism and the effect is upscale, urbane and surprisingly affordable.

The skinny building on Boylston St offers a clue that the place is efficient about its use of space. That means that the rooms are on the small side, though light colors and large mirrors keep them from feeling too cramped. It also means that the hotel packs a lot of style into a tiny space, thanks to the tasteful eye of designer Dennis Duffy: walnut furniture with chrome accents; subtly textured fabrics, B&W photographs. The hip hotel is run by a small group of warmly efficient staff that sees to the comfort of guests. The downstairs lounge spills out onto the sidewalk where the people-watching is tops.
