Ensconced in a respectfully renovated 19th-century warehouse, this self-proclaimed inn has B&B-style rooms with hotel-style service. Within a stone's throw of Faneuil Hall, the waterfront and the North End, this tasteful hostelry strikes just the right balance between historic digs and modern conveniences. For the money, there may not be a better place to stay in the entire city. OK, so it doesn't have nattily dressed doormen or a grand entryway (and you have to request that the free newspaper be delivered to your door daily), but the Harborside does have charm and character to the hilt. In its former life as a sturdy 19th-century mercantile building, the massive structure played an integral role in the bustling waterfront port. Fortunately, the architects who renovated it in the late 1990s cared about preserving historic details. Guest rooms have original exposed brick and granite walls and hardwood floors. They're offset perfectly by Oriental carpets, sleigh beds and reproduction Federal-era furnishings. Rooms also have modern bathrooms, cable TV and DVD players. Windows are well insulated from street noise.

Boston Harbor Cruises (1 Long Wharf off Atlantic Ave) offers regular ferry services to the Boston Harbor Islands. Georges Island features a 19th-century fort; Lovell Island is the largest, good for walking along dunes, marshes and meadows. Look for wild raspberries on Bumpkin Island and for a variety of birds on Grape Island.
