This upscale inn perfectly reflects its intimate, blue-blood neighborhood and melds in without flash or fanfare. Surrounded by gas-lit streets paved with old red bricks, the European-style boutique inn is fit for discriminating travelers, delivering substance along with plenty of style.Surprisingly, this hotel is the only bona fide lodging establishment on the Hill. Carved out of former residential buildings typical of the locale, the hotel's guest rooms are small, but they certainly make up for that in low-key style and comfort. You can expect individually decorated rooms filled with lush black-and-white photography, a designer's soothing palette of paint choices, oh-so-select accessories, plush duvets, pedestal sinks and louvered shutters. From windows that open to flat-screen TVs, the hotel feels like a home away from home. Although you could sightsee around Boston for days, part of the pleasure of perching here is never leaving the neighborhood - or the exclusive roof deck. The urbane, ground floor Beacon Hill Bistro (where a complimentary breakfast is served) is worthy of its lodging namesake.

At the end of Joy Street, pass through the narrow and winding Holmes Alley to South Russell St. Now turn around and come through it again, imagining yourself a slave fleeing a 'slavecatcher' (bounty hunters who pursued runaway slaves across state borders and returned them to their owners). The alley was well known to slaves but not to traders; from South Russell St it looked like a dead end.
