Hard to imagine that this property was bare-bones basic not too long ago. In late 2007 the remodeled Cass emerged as a chi chi boutique hotel, styling with hip colors and tech toys.Don't judge a hotel by its chain name. You'd never guess that the totally revamped Cass Hotel is a Holiday Inn - Express. First of all, the historic 1920s building is far from cookie cutter. And then there are the expensive hardwood floors, techie gadgets (free wi-fi, mp3-dock radios), and Kohler bath hardware that are far from typical. Not to mention that it's totally hip. Shaded lamps hang above wasabi-green upholstered headboards and coverlets pop in contrast to fluffy white duvets. Hanging flat-screen TVs, mod C-shape tables and armless couches make the most of the limited historic room size. (Rooms with two double beds are bigger than standard queens.) Complimentary coffee all day and breakfast cinnamon rolls provide a kick start for your day. The only thing limited here is food service. But the River North neighborhood adjacent is restaurant central.

To sample a Chicago specialty, walk a few blocks south to Pizzeria Uno (tel: 312 321 1000; 29 E Ohio St). This is where the deep dish concept originated in 1943, setting off the pizza revolution in which flaky crust is baked to rise an inch or two above the plate and cradle a pile of toppings. The classic lands on the table with a resounding thud and can feed a family of four at least.
