Whatever the Hotel Allegro is doing, other lodgings might want to take note. Everyone and their mother is checking in here: multi-generational ethnic families to attend reunions, spiky-haired European scenesters to sightsee, and suburbanites to see a Broadway-style show (the Allegro sits next door to the Cadillac Palace Theater). It doesn't seem like the clubby, velvet chair, abstract art atmosphere would appeal across demographics, but the 483 rooms provide good value and everyone knows it. They come in Deluxe and Premier types, the latter offering more space for an extra 20.00 or so. Bright primary colours dominate all the rooms, and trimmings include a flat-screen TV, CD player, Aveda bath products, Italian coffee and coffee maker, down comforter and pillows, and free wireless Internet access. As with sister properties Hotel Burnham and Hotel Monaco, a complimentary wine hour occurs each evening. There's a 24hr business centre, and, to prove it's a fun and fanciful kind of place, a big bowl of free Tootsie Rolls stands ready for assault at the front desk.

A few blocks east you'll come across a public artwork known as the 'Picasso' ensconced in the plaza at the Richard J Daley Center. It was created for the city by Mr Abstract himself, but no one is quite sure what it represents. Bird, dog, woman? You decide.
For years the property was known as the Bismarck Hotel, home to various Chicago political organisations, and its hallways and rooms were the scene of all manner of dubious dealings. The naughtiest things that happen these days concern the Reddi Whip and champagne that come with the Love Shack room-packages.
