The Embassy Suites provides a fine-value package, considering the cooked-to-order breakfast buffet, free evening booze, extra legroom in the units, and the River East location that puts you between Navy Pier (a 10-minute walk east) and Michigan Ave (a five-minute walk west). It's the usual Embassy Suites deal here, where each of the 455 spacious rooms has a fridge and microwave-stocked living room separated from the private bedroom. True to form, the rooms all overlook a central atrium. This version, though, is way more stunning than most, with a chic airplane-hangar feel and a small forest of trees growing in the lobby. The hotel provides an abundant breakfast, and at twilight the Embassy rolls out the barrels (ie free beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages). The place gets piled high with families, so prepare to hear rowdy kids running through the halls and breakfast room. Wired internet is available for a fee. There is an indoor pool, but it's teeny. The 'corner king' rooms cost about 20.00 more but offer more space and seclusion from the atrium noise.

Nearby Navy Pier was once the city's municipal wharf. Its half-mile (800m) length is now covered with a Ferris wheel, an IMAX theatre, numerous shops and gimmicky chain restaurants. Locals groan over its commercialization, but its lakefront view and cool breezes can't be beat. The free Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows is midway down the pier.
