The Willows is the star of the stylish Neighborhood Inns of Chicago trio. While the City Suites and Majestic hotels are both quite good, the former can be a bit too busy and the latter a bit too remote. But the Willows gets the mix just right.

Located on a peaceful side street that branches off restaurant-and-shop-filled Clark St, the Willows wins an architectural gold star for its ornate terra cotta facade. The chic little lobby provides a refuge when the winds swirl outside, offering overstuffed chairs by the fireplace as well as free chocolate chip cookies and coffee. The 55 rooms, which come in standard size and noticeably larger double and king size, evoke a 19th-century French countryside feel, done up in shades of peach, cream and soft green. Patrons report the place as wonderfully quiet even when full. There's a free continental breakfast and wireless Internet access. If there's one thing to remember, it's this: the Willows may be similarly priced to the nearby Days Inn and Inn at Lincoln Park, but it has 10 times the personality and ratchets up the quality factor big-time.
